Hygge with the Homies

The boys love little treats!

Last weekend I skipped town and met up with my friends Max, Joe, and Tyler in Brooklyn, NY. We saw the Brooklyn Bridge, hunted for great bagels and coffee, and tried to find the perfect suit for my friend Max’s wedding.

And though we did make it out on the town on a bit, some of the most fun that we had was at Joe and Tyler’s apartment. They turned a 2nd bedroom into a living room and we hung out in there drinking wine and playing videogames as it rained outside. It was a really, really nice vibe. They’d spent the morning deep cleaning the apartment, there was a candle that smelled like plants, and the art on the walls kept drawing my interest. The whole space really lent itself to being cozy, comfortable, and not wanting to experience something I might be missing outside of those four walls. There was no fomo.

After that really refreshing weekend I came home to the new house and thought – what am I doing to to make sure that my new living room is just as fun, just as cozy, and just as comfortable as Joe and Tyler’s?

That led me to conceptualize the design goal of Hygge with the Homies! From my somewhat obsessive internet reading, hygge is a Danish lifestyle concept that’s all about creating a space where you can live your coziest life and where people who are there with you are encouraged to shut the world away and emotionally connect with one another. Just like we did at Joe and Tyler’s.

So – how do you get that? Is it like feng suei where you just have to orient your furniture a certain way? Or do you take the principles of feng suie and then lean into soft blankets? And how do I then take that and center my homies? All excellent questions that we explore in the video above! Enjoy!
